Frequently Asked Questions

What is BYDAND?

The word BYDAND comes from our founder's Scottish roots. It's the Clan Gordon’s motto meaning “Abiding, Steadfast” which stands as the spirit of what we teach our clients. That is, be with the process – use what IS for transformation.

I’ve never talked to anyone. I’m used to handling things on my own. Aren’t people who go to therapy weak?

Not at all. People who ask for help know when they need it and have the courage to reach out. Everyone needs help now and then. In our work together, we’ll help you explore and identify your strengths and how to implement them to reduce the influence of the problems you are facing.

Is the 'chemical imbalance' concept in psychiatry scientifically proven?

The idea that mental disorders are caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain has been a prevalent notion in psychiatry. However, recent discussions and research suggest that this theory is not scientifically grounded as once believed. Critics argue that the chemical imbalance theory was widely accepted due to its convenience for explaining complex mental health conditions rather than being based on solid evidence. It is suggested that this narrative may have been influenced more by vested interests in the psychiatric profession and pharmaceutical industry rather than robust scientific validation. The validity of this theory remains a topic of debate, with growing emphasis on understanding mental disorders through a more holistic and multifaceted approach.  See article.

Why is therapy so expensive?

The cost of therapy reflects the significant value and impact it has on an individual's well-being. Our therapists engage in important, transformative work, requiring extensive training, expertise, and ongoing professional development. This investment in quality care ensures that our clients receive the best possible support for their mental health needs.

Additionally, we believe in the principle of 'skin in the game.' When clients invest in therapy, they are more likely to be committed and engaged in the process, which can lead to more effective and meaningful outcomes. This financial commitment is not just an investment in the services provided but, more importantly, an investment in your own personal growth and well-being.

What’s the difference between talking to you or my best friend or family?

The difference is between someone who can do something, and someone who has the training and experience to do that same thing professionally. A behavioral health professional can help you approach your situation in a new way– teach you new skills, gain different perspectives, listen to you without judgment or expectations, and help you listen to yourself. Furthermore, counseling is completely confidential. You won’t have to worry about others “knowing my business.” Lastly, if your situation provokes a great deal of negative emotion, and you’ve been confiding in a friend or family member, there is the risk that once you are feeling better you could start avoiding that person so you aren’t reminded of this difficult time in your life.

Why shouldn’t I just take medication?

Medication can be helpful. Sometimes medication is needed in conjunction with counseling.  Consult with your psychiatric team regarding medications. Our work together is designed to explore and unpack the problems you are experiencing and expand on your strengths that can help you accomplish your personal goals.  We take a holistic approach. Interestingly, when it comes to depression, numerous individuals use antidepressants with the belief that their depression stems from a biochemical source. However, research does not substantiate this notion, and the idea that antidepressants function by increasing serotonin levels lacks empirical support.  See article.

How does it work? What do I have to do in sessions?

Because each person has different issues and goals for counseling, it will be different depending on the individual. We tailor our therapeutic approach to your specific needs.  That being said, we do have a very specific methodology that we follow as therapists at BYDAND.  See Our Process.

How should I prepare for my first session?

Preparing for your first session is easy! Simply gather your thoughts, a pinch of curiosity, and a dash of openness. Leave any preconceived notions at the door, and bring your authentic self. Remember, it's not a test; it's a conversation. So, relax, and let's embark on this therapeutic journey together.

How long will it take?

Unfortunately, this is not possible to say in a general FAQs page. Everyone’s circumstances are unique to them, and the length of time counseling can take to allow you to accomplish your goals depends on your desire for personal development, your commitment, and the factors that are driving you to seek counseling in the first place.

Is spirituality important in therapy?

Spirituality can be an essential aspect of a person's life and well-being. While therapy primarily focuses on addressing health and emotional challenges, it is sensitive to the individual's beliefs and values, including their spiritual or religious beliefs. Many individuals find that integrating spirituality into their therapy process can provide a deeper understanding of their experiences and a sense of purpose. Our approach respects and acknowledges the significance of spirituality as it relates to your health. We can work together to explore and incorporate spiritual elements if you believe it would be beneficial.

Is virtual therapy effective?

Absolutely. Virtual therapy, also known as teletherapy or online therapy, has proven to be highly effective. The key to successful therapy lies in the competence of the therapist and the fit with the client. It offers convenience, access to expertise, privacy, and consistent care. It's a practical way to receive the support you need, allowing you to engage in therapy from the comfort of your own space. The effectiveness of virtual therapy is closely tied to the quality of the therapeutic relationship and the therapist's ability to provide the support and guidance you require.  See Does Virtual Therapy Work?

Can I hop aboard the virtual therapy time machine for my sessions?

Certainly! Buckle up because our virtual therapy sessions are a bit like time travel, minus the DeLorean. We'll journey together to explore your past, present, and future, all from the comfort of your favorite chair. No flux capacitor required!

Will political viewpoints be discussed or promoted during therapy sessions?

It could be discussed. However, our primary focus is on your mental health and well-being. While discussions about various life events, including political topics, may naturally arise during therapy, we maintain a neutral and non-judgmental stance. We do not advocate or promote any particular political agenda. To learn more about how we handle discussions related to politics during therapy, please refer to our page on Politics in Therapy for a detailed explanation of our approach.

I want to get the most out of therapy. What can I do to help?

We appreciate your commitment to making the most of your therapy experience. To optimize your therapy journey, consider these key steps:

- Open Communication: Be open and honest with your therapist. Share your thoughts and feelings openly to enable effective collaboration.

- Set Clear Goals: Define clear, achievable goals for therapy to guide your progress and discussions with your therapist.

- Active Engagement: Actively participate in sessions, take notes, and practice recommended strategies in your daily life.

- Patience and Consistency: Understand that progress may take time, and be consistent in attending sessions and implementing recommendations.
